Posh Stars of the Midland League (Part 2 – M to Z)

 

This section shows copies of cards of players and Managers from our Midland League days whose surnames begin with M to Z. The cards were designed and made by Tony Scarr who kindly gave his permission to ‘The Posh Supporters Trust’ to reproduce and sell them on behalf of the trust.

Fred Martin

A prolific scorer in the Midland League, Fred scored 124 goals in his 237 appearances for the Posh between 1949 and 1956.

Barry Matthews

Barry played for the Posh in the Midland League for just 1 season; 1953/54.

That season Barry made 30 Midland League appearances scoring 4 times. In the FA Cup that season Barry made 3 appearances scoring once in the 4th qualifying round against Grays Athletic.

Jim McCabe

Born 17 September 1918 in Londonderry, Jim (surname McCabe not McBabe as on the photo) played for the Posh for just 1 season the 1954/55 one.

That season Jim made 30 Midland League appearances scoring once.

Peter McNamee

Born 20 March 1935 in Glasgow, Peter played for the Posh from 1954 to 1966.

During our Midland League days Peter made 109 appearances scoring 57 goals.

Peter also played for the Posh on 20 August 1960 in our first game in the Football League.

Ken Moody

Born 12 November 1924 in Grimsby, Ken played for the Posh in the Midland League from the 1951/52 season through to the 1954/55 season.

During that time Ken made 150 Midland League appearances scoring 4 goals.

George Moulson

Born 6 August 1914 in Tipperary, George a keeper played for the Posh from the 1949/50 season through to the 1951/52 season.

During that time George appeared for the Posh 118 times.

Interesting fact: George played three times for the Republic of Ireland making his international debut in a 2-0 defeat to Portugal on 23 May 1948 in the Estadio da Luz, Lisbon.

Jim Rayner

Born 31 March 1935 in Durham, Jim played for the Posh from the 1958/59 season through to the 1962/63 when we were in the Football League.

During the Midland League days Jim played for the Posh on 54 occasions scoring an unbelievable 64 goals!

Billy Rees

Born 30 September 1937 in Swansea, Billy played for the Posh during the 1958/59 season.

Billy only made 4 Midland League appearances for the Posh and moved on to Crystal Palace. On his debut the Posh won 5-0!

Dan Reilly

Dan only played 5 times for the Posh in the Midland League in the 1958/59 and 1959/60 seasons but still managed to score 2 goals.

Tex Rickards

Born 19 February 1915 in Giltbrook, Nottinghamshire, Tex played for the Posh in the Midland League for 3 seasons (1946/47 to 1948/49).

During his spell at the Posh Tex made 117 appearances scoring 13 goals.

Norman Rigby

Born 23 May 1923 in Newark-on-Trent, Norman played for the Posh from the 1951/52 season to the 1961/62 season.

Norman made 339 appearances for the Posh in the Midland League scoring 1 goal. He was part of our 5 Championship winning teams in the 1950’s.

After leaving the Posh Norman played for Boston Utd but returned to the Posh as coach under Gordon Clark for the 1964/65 season. Norman stepped up from coach to Manager in September 1967.

Arnold Robinson

Arnold played for the Posh for 3 seasons; 1948/49, 1949/50 and 1950/51.

Scoring more than 1 goal every 2 games Arnold played 79 times for the Posh in the Midland League and scored 44 goals. Arnold also scored 3 times in the FA Cup in 6 appearances.

Colin Senior

Born 3 June 1927 in Dewsbury, Colin played for the Posh just 1 season; 1953/54.

That season Colin made 24 appearances in the Midland League.

Interesting fact: Colin played for both Huddersfield Town and Accrington Stanley in the Football League during the 1950s

Bernard Shaw

Bernard played for the Posh for four seasons and every season we won the Midland League.

From1955 through to 1959 Bernard made 157 appearances in the Midland League scoring 17 goals.

Paddy Sloan

Born 30 April 1920 in Armagh, Paddy played for the Posh from the 1952/53 season through to the 1953/54 season.

During his spell at the Posh Paddy made 80 appearances in the Midland League scoring 13 goals.

Ray Smith

Born 13 September 1934 in Kingston upon Hull, Ray played for the Posh from the 1956/57 season through to the 1962/63 season.

In the Midland League Ray made 115 appearances for the Posh scoring 76 goals.

Ray also played for the Posh on 20 August 1960 in our first game in the Football League.

Ellis Stafford

Born 17 August 1929 in Sheffield, Ellis made his debut for the Posh on 21 August 1954 against Rotherham Utd Reserves in the Midland League.

Ellis went on to play a total of 182 times scoring 8 goals in the Midland League and was part of the 5 Midland League Championship winning teams.

 

George Stafford

Born 21 August 1926 in Sheffield, George (older brother of Ellis) played for the Posh from the1951/52 to 1955/56 seasons.

During that time George made 38 appearances in the Midland League.

George Swindin

Born 4 December 1914 in Yorkshire, George came to Peterborough United as player-manager in 1954, and as Manager took the team to several famous FA Cup runs which included getting to the Fourth Round in 1956–57 and three consecutive Midland League titles between 1956 and 1958.

George’s playing record in the Midland League was 18 appearances.

Interesting fact: Whilst at Arsenal George won three First Division Championship medals.

Doug Taft

Born 9 March 1926 in Leicester, Doug played for the Posh in the Midland League for 2 seasons (1953/54 and 1954/55).

During his time at the Posh Doug made 83 Midland League appearances scoring 49 goals.

Doug was also part of the team that played against Cardiff City in the 3rd Round of the 1953/54 FA Cup at Ninian Park in front of 38,000 spectators.

Jimmy Sheavills

Born 28 July 1940 in Kent, Jimmy joined the Posh in the 1959/60 season appearing 5 times in the Midland League scoring 5 times.

Jimmy also played 30 times for the Posh in the Football League.

Jim Walker

Born 1 July 1931 in Sheffield, Jim played for the Posh in 3 of our Midland League Championship winning sides (1957/58, 1958/59 and 1959/60).

During our Midland League days Jim made 95 appearances before playing in Posh’s first Football League game on 20 August 1960 against Wrexham.

Vic Walker

Vic played for the Posh for 4 seasons (1950/51 through to 1953/54).

During his time at the Posh, Vic made 113 appearances scoring 9 goals.

Jack Walls

Born 8 May 1932 in Durham, Jack played for the Posh in the Midland League for 4 seasons (1956/57 to 1959/60) winning the Championship every season.

He made 132 league appearances and 19 FA Cup appearances before starting his first of 78 Football League appearances for the Posh on 20 August 1960 in our first game in the Football League.

Fred Warnes

Fred played for the Posh before and after the second World War.

In total Fred made120 Midland League appearances scoring 11 times.

Al Woollard

Born 24th August 1930, Al played for the Posh just one season; 1952/53.

That season Al made 18 Midland Leagues appearances. Also that season in the FA Cup Al made 7 appearances including the 1st Round game against League opposition Torquay Utd which Posh won 2-1.

Ted Widdowfield

Born 25 March 1915 in Sunderland, Ted played for the Posh in the 1949/50 season.

That season Ted made 45 Midland League appearances scoring 20 goals.

Terry Woodgate

Born 11 December 1919 in East Ham, Terry a winger from West Ham played for the Posh for 2 seasons (1953/54 and 1954/55).

During his spell at the Posh Terry made 50 Midland League appearances scoring 15 times.

Kevin Wood

Born 3rd November 1929 in Doncaster, Kevin played for the Posh for 2 seasons (1952/53 and 1953/54).

During that time Kevin made 43 appearances scoring 8 goals.

Cliff Woods

Born 30th October 1925 in Farcet, Cliff played for the Posh in the Midland League for 9 seasons (1945/46 to 1953/54).

During that time Cliff appeared for the Posh 172 times in the Midland League scoring 1 goal.

Cliff who died in 2011 was a member of the Posh Supporters Trust.
