Posh Stars of the Midland League (Part 1 – A to L)

This section shows copies of cards of players and Managers from our Midland League days whose surnames begin with A to L. The cards were designed and made by Tony Scarr who kindly gave his permission to ‘The Posh Supporters Trust’ to reproduce and sell them on behalf of the trust.

Norman Adcock

Born 21 February 1923 in Boston Lincolnshire, Norman played for the Posh in the Midland League in the 1952/53 season making 10 appearances and scoring 5 goals.

Interesting fact:  Norman played 40 matches in the Italian Serie A from 1949 to 1951 with Padova and Triestina.

Tommy Asher

Born 21 December 1936 in Hatfield, Tommy played just twice for the Posh in the Midland League, both games were in the 1959/60 season.

 

Roy Banham

Born 30th October 1936 in Nottingham, Roy played for the Posh from 1958 to 1962 when his career was cut short by a serious injury sustained after a collision with a goalkeeper.

He played 41 games for the Posh in the Midland League scoring 1 goal.

Interesting fact: In 1953 Roy played in the Great Britain Junior Cup Final at Wembley representing the National Association of Boys’ Clubs.

Ray Barr

Ray played 36 times for the Posh in the Midland League, 8 times in the 1955/56 season and 28 times in the 1956/57 season.

Ernie Brooksbank

Born 3 March 1920 in Grantham, Ernie played for the Posh from the 1937/38 season to 1949.

During this time Ernie made 92 Midland League appearances scoring 44 goals.

 

Bernie Bryan

Born 9 September 1922 in Banbury, Bernie played for the Posh just after the war from the 1945/46 season to the 1950/51 season.

During his time at the Posh Bernie made 216 appearances in the Midland League scoring twice plus he played 24 times in the FA Cup..

Dizzie Burton

Born near Barnsley, Dizzie (real name Stanley) played for the Posh just one season (the 1947/48 season).

Dizzie played for Doncaster Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers (for whom he appeared in the 1939 FA Cup final).

Interesting fact: Dizzie was partially deaf and so did not play to the whistle. His nickname of “Dizzie” was due to him continuing to run after the referee had blown his whistle!

Doug Campbell

Born 14 December 1922 in Kirkintilloch Scotland, Doug played for the Posh for three seasons (1952/53 to 1954/55).

During his spell at the Posh he made 68 Midland League appearances scoring 21 times plus he played 12 times in the FA Cup scoring 3 goals.

 

Derek Chadwick

Derek played in 3 Midland League Championship winning sides for the Posh (1957/58, 1958/59 and 1959/60).

In total Derek made 109 appearances for the Posh ( 95 in the Midland League and 14 in the FA Cup) scoring 5 times (all in the league).

 

Henry Cockburn

Born 14 September 1921 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Henry played for Manchester Utd (where he won the FA Cup and League Division 1 title in 1948 and 1952 respectively) and Bury before joining the Posh in 1956.

Henry played in the 1956/57 and 1957/58 Midland League championship winning sides. In total Henry played 39 times in the Midland League (scoring once) and 6 times in the FA Cup.

Interesting fact: Henry was a full international and played for England 13 times.

Bert Cockroft

Born 21 November 1918 in Barnsley, Bert played for the Posh for 2 seasons (1948/49 and 1949/50) making 63 Midland League appearances (scoring 2 goals) and 8 FA Cup appearances.

Prior to playing for the Posh, Bert played for Bradford City in the Football League and Halifax Town.

Ron Cooper

A local lad, Ron was born 28 August 1938 in Peterborough and made his debut at Skegness Town on 18 April 1959.

Ron made at total of 13 appearances for the Posh in the Midland League playing in both the 1958/59 and 1959/60 Championship winning seasons.

Interesting fact: Despite playing in the Midland League for the Posh and being at the Posh during our first three seasons in the Football League, Ron didn’t make his Football League debut until the 1963/64 season.

Jimmy Crawford

Born 27 September 1930 in Bellshill Scotland, Jimmy played for the Posh in the Midland League for two seasons (1956/57 and 1957/58).

In total Jimmy made 24 appearances scoring 1 goal.

Tom Daley

Born 15 November 1933 in Grimsby, Tom (a goalkeeper) played in our final Midland League Championship team in 1959/60.

That season Tom played 20 times in the Midland League and 5 times in the FA Cup.

Adam Dickson

Another goalkeeper, Adam born 4th January 1929 in Hamilton Scotland was at the Posh from the 1955/56 season to the 1957/58 season.

During his spell at the Posh Adam made 18 appearances in the Midland League (14 in 1955/56 and 4 in 1956/57).

Andy Donaldson

Born 22 March 1925 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Andy a prolific goalscorer had two spells with the Posh (his first spell was the 1951/52 and 1952/53 seasons with his second spell being 1955/56 to 1958/59).

In total Andy made 160 Midland League appearances scoring 97 goals and appeared 21 times scoring 10 goals in the FA Cup.

Norman Douglass

Born 14 May 1930 in Sunderland, Norman played for the Posh just one season in our Championship winning team 1956/57.

That season Norman played 34 games in the Midland League and 6 times in the FA Cup.

Johnny Dowson

Born 18 September 1926 in Ashington, Johnny played for the Posh for two seasons (1950/51 and 1951/52).

Johnny made 68 appearances in the Midland League scoring 39 goals.

Jimmy Dunne

Born 16 March 1935 in Dublin, Jimmy played for the Posh in our last Midland League Championship winning team in the 1959/60 season.

That season Jimmy made 13 appearances scoring 3 goals.

Interesting fact: Jimmy won the Irish FA Cup in 1959 with St Patrick’s Athletic.

Dennis Emery

To many of those old enough to remember Dennis was the best player ever to play for the Posh.

Born 4 October 1933 in Sandy Bedfordshire, Dennis played for the Posh from the 1954/55 season to the 1963/64 season winning the Midland League Championship 5 times.

During our Midland League days Dennis played 205 times for us scoring an amazing 171 goals!

Jack Fairbrother

Better known as our Manager Jack was born on 16 August 1917 in Burton upon Trent and played for the Posh in the Midland League for two seasons (1952/53 and 1953/54).

During that time Jack made 60 Midland League appearances.

Interesting fact: Jack won the FA Cup in 1951 playing for Newcastle Utd against Blackpool.

Jim Fallon

Born 14 January 1912 in Dublin, Jim played for the Posh for two seasons (1948/49 and 1949/50.

During his time at the Posh Jim played 56 games in the Midland League as well as 8 games in the FA Cup.

Des Farrow

Born 11 February 1926 in Stoke on Trent, Des played for the Posh 29 times in the Midland League of which 25 appearances were made the year we won our first Midland League Championship in 1955/56.

Christy Fletcher

Born 14 June 1933 in Donegal, Christy only played 4 games for the Posh in the Midland League (all in the 1959/60 season) but still managed to score 3 goals.

Bob Gibson

Born 5 August 1927 in Ashington, Bob played for the Posh 2 seasons (1955/56 and 1956/57).

A prolific goalscorer, Bob scored 51 goals in 55 outings for the Posh in the Midland League.

Jimmy Hagan

The Manager who was in charge for our last two seasons in the Midland League.

Both seasons we won the league and in his first season in charge (1958/59) the Posh went undefeated throughout the whole of the season in the league and scored 137 goals.

Billy Hails

Born 19 February 1935 in Durham, Billy played for the Posh from 1955 to 1962.

He played in all our 5 Midland League Championship sides making a total of 187 games scoring 72 goals.

George Hair

Born 28 April 1925 in Ryton, Tyne and Wear, George played for the Posh from the 1950/51 season through to our first Midland League title in the 1955/56 season.

In total George played 168 times for the Posh in the Midland League scoring 40 goals.

George Hall

George played for the Posh for 3 seasons (1951/52, 1952/53 and 1953/54) making 84 appearances.

Jack Hogg

Born 7 October 1931 in Blyth, Jack played for the Posh just 1 season (1956/57) making 22 appearances.

Interesting fact: Jack left the Posh for Gateshead who in 1960 we took their place in the Football League.

Roy Jacobs

Roy was part of 4 Midland League Championship winning sides though in the 1958/59 and 1959/60 seasons he only made 3 appearances.

In total Roy made 38 appearances in the Midland League for the Posh.

Jim Kelly

Born 4 June 1933 in Bellshill Scotland, Jim a centre forward played for the Posh in the 1954/55 season making 29 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

Jim went on to play for Swindon Town in the Football League.

Roy Killin

Born 18 July 1929 in Toronto, Roy played for the Posh from the 1954/55 season through to the 1957/58 season.

During his spell at the Posh Roy made 96 Midland League appearances as well as 5 FA Cup appearances.

Jimmy Longworth

Jimmy played for the Posh between 1956 and 1958 making 34 appearances in the Midland League scoring 22 goals.

Jimmy also played 4 games in the FA Cup scoring 3 goals whilst at the Posh.

Jerry Lowery

Born 19 October 1924 in Newcastle upon Tyne Jerry, a goalkeeper played for the Posh 2 seasons (1954/55 and 1955/56) making 76 Midland League appearances.
