The Posh sent Stockport crashing out of the cup at London Road in this 1st round replay.

Stockport boss Paul Simpson named an unchanged side for the third game in a row ahead of the fixture and with County, 9/1 outsiders before kick-off, they were hoping to cause a shock and tee up a second round derby clash against Bury at Gigg Lane.

However their hopes were shattered midway through the first half when Posh centre-half Kelvin Langmead deservedly put the Posh in front. Stockport striker George Donnelly was caught in possession which led to a swift counter-attack from the Posh.

Aaron McLean forced an excellent save out of County keeper Matt Glennon, but from the resulting corner Stockport failed to clear their lines properly and Langmead swept the ball home from eight yards out to put the Posh in front.

In fairness, it could have been worse for Stockport but for a superb display from keeper Glennon who denied Craig Mackail-Smith a first half hat-trick as he pulled off three brilliant saves.

County’s only shot on target came on 33 minutes after some excellent work by Donnelly on the left wing to tee up Adam Griffin, but the winger saw his snapshot palmed away by Joe Lewis in the Posh goal.

Stockport looked sluggish after the restart and conceded two quick-fire goals from Craig Mackail-Smith and Lee Tomlin, which prompted Stockport Manager Paul Simpson to ring the changes.

Simpson threw on three subs, including Jake Simpson and Yannick Salem, but it was Greg Tansey who inspired a mini revival with a stunning right-foot shot which went in off the post on 71 minutes.

Five minutes later Tansey rattled Posh’s nerves again as he almost added a second but keeper Joe Lewis made a stunning save to turn his header on to the bar, before Aaron McLean put the game beyond doubt with a powerful strike in injury time.
