First goals in a Peterborough United shirt for Jimmy Bullard and Marc Joseph helped Barry Fry’s men on the way to an astonishing 6-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth at London Road, in the biggest home win since 1996 where Wycombe Wanderers and Rotherham United both conceded six.

Joseph set Posh on their way after just 90 seconds and Leon McKenzie found the net on his return from injury as the home side ran riot in the pouring rain in front of a sparse London Road crowd.

In difficult conditions, a free kick awarded for a foul on Neale Fenn, was blasted in by defender Joseph who celebrated his first League goal from fully 25 yards.

Welshman Gareth Jelleyman, making a welcome return from injury, made a great tackle to stop Wade Elliott from getting to the by-line as Bournemouth looked to get back on level scores.

Then on the 10-minute mark, Posh increased their lead when Jimmy Bullard latched on to a Fenn header and superbly struck a volley from 25 yards over Cherries goalkeeper Gareth Stewart.

The lively Fenn was next to try his luck for a confident Posh side but Mahe: blocked his curling effort for a corner. From the resulting Williams set piece on 18 minutes, Leon McKenzie struck the crossbar as Posh went in search of a deserved third goal. Elliott was credited with Bournemouth’s first shot on target, when Tyler clutched his skidding effort.

Feeney should have pulled one back for the visitors before half time but his weak shot failed to test Posh’s shot stopper. Posh increased their lead three minutes before the break when McKenzie fired under the Cherries goalkeeper after beating Purches in the air to give the score a flattering look.

Things got even better in the second period Posh pressed further forward and were rewarded with more goals. Fenn poked home from close range after McKenzie held the ball up well on the edge of the penalty area. And the former Spurs man doubled his tally for the night on 55 minutes when he powered a header past the goalkeeper after Bullard expertly found him in the area.

Tom Williams nearly made it 6-0 just before the hour mark with a rasping drive but his shot failed to test the goalkeeper. Next Holmes tried to pull a consolation back for Bournemouth but his header went wide of Tyler’s goal.

Substitute Daniel French got in on the goal celebrations when, with his first touch, he hooked a superb half volley into the top corner following a long Joseph throw in to make the score 6-0. In search of his hat-trick, Fenn was desperately unlucky to see his delicate free kick brilliantly tipper around the post by Stewart in the visitors’ goal in the final minutes.
