Posh v Mansfield Town 21 Jan 61

Venue: London Road, Peterborough

Attendance: 10,628

Score: Peterborough Utd 2 v Mansfield Town 1

Referee: M. Dixon.

Although they were a goal down after 18 minutes, and quite obviously did not find the exceptionally muddy pitch to their liking, Peterborough Utd stuck manfully to their task and well deserved to beat an experienced and surprisingly active Mansfield side by the odd goal in three.

Two splendid goals by Dennis Emery and Terry Bly did the trick, and but for some brilliant goalkeeping the Posh forwards might easily have had another three or four goals in the second half.

In the early stages United fiddled about alarmingly and a series of mis-directed passes kept Mansfield on the attack.

The visitors earned their opening goal after 18 minutes when Fitzsimons swept the ball out to his left wing and positioned himself cleverly to head home the return cross.

This goal stung Posh into action. Ray Smith had his neat header tipped over the crossbar and then Billy Hails crashed a tremendous shot against the face of the bar.

Posh were not to be denied, however, and, with Dick Whittaker joining the attack on the right wing, Hails slipped the ball inside for Emery to score with a tremendous rising shot.

In the second half Posh dominated the game. The Mansfield goalkeeper Bob Wyllie made some brilliant saves from Smith and Emery and once Hails saw his ground shot rebound from an upright.

After 66 minutes Bly put Posh in front with what turned out to be the winning goal. The United centre forward had his great header well stopped by Wyllie but the Mansfield goalkeeper could not hold the ball and Bly followed through to blast it home from an acute angle.

Roy Banham, who deputised for Norman Rigby, did all that was asked of him in keeping the centre forward out of the game. Right back Dick Whittaker had another splendid game while Billy Hails took the honours in the forward line.

On this form Billy could quite easily cause the Villa defence a lot of trouble.
