Posh v Carlisle Utd 1st Rd 8 Nov 2014
Venue: London Road, Peterborough
Score: Peterborough Utd 2 v Carlisle Utd 1
Officials: Scott Mathieson, David Plowright, David Rock and Adam Crysell
What looked on paper an easy game turned out to be a rather more difficult fixture for the Posh.
In fact Posh fell behind after just eight minutes and it was a terrible goal for Darren Ferguson’s men to concede. Christian Burgess’s initial poor header was compounded when Michael Bostwick and Michael Smith both failed to clear and Derek Asamoah hooked a volley over keeper Ben Alnwick and into the back of the net.
Posh appealed in vain for a spot-kick on 14 minutes as Taylor’s cross appeared to strike the arm of Robson, but nothing was given.
Vassell then hooked a shot wide of the near post from another Taylor delivery. Bostwick was denied by a superb stop from Hanford on 19 minutes, the Cumbrian’s shot-stopper pushing the effort around the post.
Meppen-Walter fired wide after a free-kick was allowed to reach the centre back 10-yards from goal.
Washington saw a shot blocked after a good turn on the edge of the box on 31 minutes.
Bostwick fired wide after a good pull back from Taylor moments later.
On 42 minutes, Posh levelled the scores as a deep corner from Newell was met by Christian Burgess who powered home a header into the corner for his first goal for the club.
A deflected free-kick from Grainger was tipped over by Alnwick as the first half moved into stoppage time. Alnwick made another excellent stop to deny Robson moments after the re-start after he had beaten Smith in the build-up.
A jinking run from Taylor saw him make his way into the penalty box on 53 minutes, but his shot went into the side-netting.
Mendez-Laing was denied by Hanford by his near post before Robson whistled a cross-shot across the six-yard box.
Posh made a change on 65 minutes with Erhun Oztumer replacing Mendez-Laing. Bostwick fired wide on 71 minutes after a patient Posh build-up.
On 78 minutes a snap-shot from Taylor was beaten away by Hanford as Posh pressed.
The Posh finally secured their spot in round two of the FA Cup with a late winner from Christian Burgess who netted a winner a minute into stoppage time to send Darren Ferguson’s men into the hat.
