Burton Albion v Posh 1st Rd 7th Nov 2015
Venue: The Pirelli Stadium, Burton
Attendance: 2,517 (584 Posh fans)
Score: Burton Albion 0 v Peterborough Utd 3
Referee: David Webb
This was the third time the Posh had faced Burton Albion in the FA Cup having faced them twice in the competition in the 2005/06 season when Burton Albion eventually triumphed 1-0 in a 1st Round replay. Burton Albion at that time were a non-league club.
Striker Conor Washington was Posh’s hero in our 3-0 win scoring twice as Posh turned the tables on their League One rivals to avenge an early-season defeat.
Washington gave the Posh the lead against the run of play three minutes before the break when he raced onto a Michael Smith pass to fire home from six yards.
At the start of the second half there were chances for both sides with Posh keeper Ben Alnwick tipping over a Phil Edwards header and Washington lobbing agonisingly wide of an empty Burton net.
Burton Albion goalkeeper Remi Matthews, a Norwich City loanee, did well to tip Jon Taylor’s deflected shot onto the crossbar and produced a stunning reflex save to keep out another effort by Taylor, this time a header.
However, there was nothing the Burton Albion keeper could do to prevent Washington from doubling Posh’s lead after a defensive mistake by Edwards after 70 minutes.
Victory was sealed by Jermaine Anderson with a close-range finish six minutes from the end. The goal was sweet for not only the player but players and fans as Jermaine had a goal unfairly disallowed against Burton earlier in the season which would have given Posh a 2-2 draw in League One in August.
Sadly the victory was marred by a straight red card for substitute Jack Baldwin after an ugly lunge at Burton’s full-back Phil Edwards in added time.
Baldwin who had only been on the pitch for one minute was returning to the side after a year’s absence due to a cruciate ligament injury which he sustained in November 2014 in a League 1 game against Scunthorpe Utd.
