John Barnwell

Born 24 December 1938 in Newcastle, John played for Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Utd. After retiring from playing John moved into coaching, becoming a coach under Noel Cantwell at the Posh. As Noel’s number 2 he helped lead the Posh to promotion in the 1973/74 season to the old Third Division. John succeeded Noel as Manager of the Posh in 1977 and narrowly missed out on reaching the Second Division in his first and only full season. He left the Posh in 1978 after a dispute with the club’s board. After the Posh John managed Wolverhampton Wanderers taking them to a FA Cup semi-final against his old club Arsenal and then victory in the 1980 League Cup final against another of his old clubs Nottingham Forest.
