George Hair

Born 28th April 1925 in Ryton, Tyne and Wear – died 24th October 1994

Signed by Bob Gurney, George, a left winger, made his Posh debut in the 5-1 win on the opening day of the 1951/52 season.

George helped Posh to their highest finish in the FA Cup in 1954 (at the time) when the Posh reached the 3rd Round Proper for the first time in their history losing to First Division side Cardiff City 3-1 in front of a 38,000 crowd. George played a significant part  in Posh winning their first Midland League title in the 1955/56 season when he played in 42 of the 46 league games scoring 16 goals (3 from the penalty spot).

In total George made 168 Midland League appearances scoring 40 goals as well as making 17 FA Cup appearances scoring 3 goals.

After leaving Peterborough George went to Boston United for a season then on to Spalding United for several seasons.

Did you know: George was signed from Grimsby Town who had paid Newcastle Utd £6,000 for his services during the 1948/49 season. The majority of George’s Newcastle appearances were in war-time matches.
