Matthew Etherington

Born 14th August 1981 in Truro, Cornwall

“Mushy” as he was known by Posh fans became Posh’s youngest ever Football League player when he made his first team debut aged just 15 at Brentford in May 1997. Before he was allowed to play Posh had to get a letter from his Headmaster granting him permission to play!

Mushy starred in Posh’s 1997/98 youth team and made a couple of more first team appearances that season. Signing professionally for the Posh in August 1998 Mushy scored his first senior goal for the Posh in September 1998 when Posh beat Barnet away 9-1, making him Posh’s youngest ever goal scorer.

That same season, Mushy won England U18 caps and became the first 17 year old to be named in a PFA representative side.

In January 2000 Mushy along with Simon Davies was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in a combined fee of £1.2 million.

Did you know: Mushy played in 2 FA Cup finals, for West Ham Utd in 2005 and Stoke City in 2011. He was a runner-up on both occasions.
