Following the sad news of Billy’s Hails death earlier this week, the Posh Supporters Trust were further sadden to hear that another former Posh player Tommy Asher has died aged 80.
Born in Hatfield, Tommy played in the Football League for Notts County during the 1957–58 and 1958–59 seasons before being signed by Posh Manager Jimmy Hagan in 1959 in time for the start of the 1959/60 season.
First team opportunities for Tommy at the Posh were limited as the inside forward positions, in which he played, were occupied by Dennis Emery and Ray Smith.
Tommy made his Posh first team debut on the 29th August 1959 in a Midland League game at Portland Park when Posh lost 2-1 to Ashington. Tommy kept his place for the next Posh game away at Spennymoor which Posh won 3-1.
Sadly the Spennymoor game was Tommy’s last first team appearance for the Posh but he was a regular for the Reserves in the Eastern Counties League for the remainder of the 1959/60 season.
He was a prolific goal scorer for the reserves and even scored 4 goals in one match against Harwich & Parkeston at London Road on 10th October 1959 in the Eastern Counties League.
In 1960 Tommy left the Posh to join Ilkeston Town in the Central Alliance.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Tommy’s family at this very sad time.

The Posh Supporters Trust were sad to hear that former Posh winger and manager Billy Hails recently died aged 82.
Born in County Durham Billy joined the Posh from Lincoln City in 1955 and played for the Posh from 1955 through to 1962.
As a Posh player he won the Midland League title five times and the 4th Division League title in the 1960/61 season.
Billy left the Posh in October 1962 to join rivals Northampton Town , who he helped to the 3rd Division title in 1963.
After Northampton Billy had spells with Luton Town, Nuneaton Borough and Rugby before Jim Iley brought him back to the Posh in the late 1960’s as trainer.
In 1977 Billy was John Barnwell’s right-hand man at the Posh and was appointed caretaker manager before his role was made permanent in November 1978.
Our thoughts and condolences go to Billy’s family at this very sad time.
