Chris Turner Memorial Statue Launch Evening Summary

On Thursday 19th November, two board members represented the Trust at a businesses launch event, held to raise awareness of the Chris Turner Memorial Statue project. The event was held at London Road with supporters groups and the club itself well represented. Also in attendance was the proposed sculptor for the project, Sean Hedges-Quinn (an Ipswich Town fan).

The event commenced with a thorough description of the background to the project from a representative of the Chris Turner Memorial Statute Committee and included a 12 minute film presentation on Chris’s life. Proposals of where to position the statue were discussed. Sean then gave a fascinating insight to the the process of designing and building a statute, in particular how most examples of his work are based on multiple images that he ‘blends’ to create a final figure that captures the essence of the person. In the case of the proposal for Chris’s statute, this will likely include his classic Wembley smile and his ‘thumbs-up’ pose to the London Road end. Sean explained how many of his football statutes have become focal meeting points for fans, whilst becoming attractions to be visited by opposition supporters. He also stated that a football statue has never been vandalised in England, so this shouldn’t be a concern to donators. He also talked briefly about his other work, which has included a range of films and TV such as Harry Potter, James Bond and Thomas the Tank Engine, along with non-football statues, such as the rather brilliant one of Arthur Lowe as ‘Captain Mainwaring’ in Thetford. His website is well worth a look, in particular the football statues, here:

Following a break, Bob Syms, Chief Executive of our beloved club, gave a short speech urging local businesses to view this is an opportunity to include fundraising for the statue during their discussions with staff and business contacts – to help provide a community focal point at London Road and a fitting tribute to  ‘Son of God’.

The Board of the Posh Supporters Trust fully supports the efforts of the Chris Turner Memorial Committee.

Chris Turner statue

This Friday (20th November at 7.00pm) at the ABAX Stadium London Road sees the  supporters launch night to help with the production of a statue of Chris Turner.

Shortly after Chris’s death a group of Posh fans got together and came up with the idea of life size statue of Chris to honour the Posh legend.

The group formed a committee to investigate the costs, logistics, planning permission etc.  and have overcome a number of obstacles to take the project forward. They now need YOUR help.

A base, plinth, delivery of statue, erection, security and general maintenance will all have to be paid for, the exact amount is at present not known but it will be over £75,000. However massive and frightening this amount is, rest assured the committee are fully aware of the daunting size of the task ahead.

We are equally positive all Posh fans are behind the idea and that the finished product will give us all a focal point on a match day where we can pay our respects, use it as a meeting point (“meet you at Chris”) and be something to be proud of in the knowledge that we, Posh fans had paid for this amazing tribute.

The group have commissioned one of the elite sporting statues sculptor Mr Sean Hedges Quinn who is a football fan himself. Sean is responsible for the amazing statues of Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Bobby Robson, Bob Stokoe and Ted Bates and his amazing work can be seen on his website.

So why not go along to the ABAX Stadium on Friday night to support this worthy venture.
